Jordan Futrell

MSW, LSW · Pittsburgh, PA · He/Him

Hi, I’m Jordan. I’m a Licensed Social Worker and I create a supportive space where clients feel heard and valued. I view clients as the experts of their own experience and work together to explore what matters most to them — whether that’s working through depression, anxiety, trauma, ADHD, or navigating identity, relationships, and life’s bigger questions.

Why I Do This Work

From My Own Experience to Yours

I became a therapist because of my own experiences navigating life’s challenges. I understand how difficult it can feel to be stuck or overwhelmed — and how transformative it can be when someone genuinely meets you where you are without trying to rush you somewhere else.

That’s the work I want to do. I’m passionate about helping others find hope, build resilience, and take meaningful steps toward living the life they actually want — not the one that other people, systems, or expectations have laid out for them.

My background brings together two unusual paths. I majored in biology at Penn State and worked as an EMT before becoming a therapist. That training in fast-thinking, high-stakes situations shaped how I show up clinically — calm, present, focused on what’s actually in front of us.

“You are the expert on your own experience. My job is to walk alongside you while you build the life you want.”

Background & Experience

VA, Community Mental Health, and an Unusual Path Here

My clinical training and experience have taken me through some of the most demanding mental health environments. I’ve worked at the VA serving veterans navigating PTSD, military sexual trauma, and the complex transitions of returning to civilian life. I’ve also worked in community mental health agencies serving clients across the full range of presenting concerns.

I hold a Master of Social Work from West Chester University of Pennsylvania and I’m licensed as a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in Pennsylvania. I’m trained in EMDR therapy for trauma processing. I work with adolescents 14+ and adults of all ages, with particular focus on LGBTQIA+ individuals, veterans, and people navigating religious trauma.

I approach therapy through an anti-oppressive lens. That means I take seriously the ways systems — family systems, cultural expectations, religious institutions, healthcare, social and political environments — shape mental health. We can work on individual coping skills all day, but if we don’t also acknowledge the systems pressing on people, we’re missing half the picture.

My Approach to Counseling

Anti-Oppressive, Skills-Focused, Values-Driven

I approach therapy through an anti-oppressive lens — validating clients’ difficult experiences while empowering them to learn and practice skills for managing life’s challenges.

You can expect a supportive, non-judgmental space where your experiences are honored and your growth is the focus. I use approaches that help clients explore their values, build skills, and take meaningful action — not just process feelings, but actually move toward the life you want to be living.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing for trauma processing — helping the brain reprocess distressing memories without requiring you to relive them in detail.

Acceptance-Based Therapy

Building psychological flexibility — learning to move toward what matters even when difficult thoughts and emotions are present. Particularly powerful for anxiety and identity-related struggles.

DBT

Dialectical Behavior Therapy for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness — practical skills for managing intense emotions.

Motivational Interviewing

A collaborative conversation style that helps clients explore ambivalence and clarify what they actually want. Especially useful when change feels complicated or stuck.

CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for examining the relationships between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors — and developing more effective patterns where the current ones aren’t working.

Anti-Oppressive Lens

Taking seriously the systems that shape mental health — family, cultural, religious, social, political. Therapy that doesn’t just locate the problem inside you when it’s actually around you.

Specialized Care for Specific Communities

LGBTQIA+ Affirming. Veteran-Informed. Religious Trauma Aware.

I work most often with people whose stories don’t fit neatly into the mainstream therapy frame — LGBTQIA+ individuals navigating identity, veterans navigating service-related trauma and reintegration, and people working through religious trauma or leaving high-control religious environments.

For these communities, finding a therapist who actually understands the specific context matters more than for almost any other population. I bring training, ongoing study, and direct experience working in these spaces — not just openness to working with them.
