Process Trauma Without Having to Relive Every Detail

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — is one of the most rigorously researched trauma treatments available. It helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional charge and stop driving present-day symptoms like anxiety, hypervigilance, flashbacks, and emotional reactivity.

EMDR is endorsed by the WHO, the American Psychiatric Association, and the VA as a first-line treatment for PTSD. At Darin King Counseling, EMDR is delivered via secure telehealth to all Pennsylvania residents — and research confirms telehealth EMDR is equally effective as in-person delivery.

  • Traumatic memories that intrude on daily life despite time having passed
  • Hypervigilance — feeling constantly on alert, startling easily, difficulty relaxing
  • Emotional reactivity that feels out of proportion to current situations
  • Avoidance of people, places, or situations that trigger distressing memories
  • Negative core beliefs about yourself rooted in past experiences
  • Anxiety or panic that hasn’t fully responded to talk therapy alone
“EMDR helps the brain finish processing what it couldn’t at the time. You don’t have to relive it — you just have to be willing to heal.”

The EMDR Treatment Protocol

EMDR follows a structured 8-phase protocol — each phase building on the last, with safety and stabilization always as the foundation.

Phase 1–2

Assessment & Stabilization

We build safety, establish coping resources, and assess your readiness before any trauma processing begins. This phase is never rushed — your stability is the foundation of effective EMDR.

Phase 3–6

Desensitization & Reprocessing

Using bilateral stimulation, your brain reprocesses the target memory — reducing its emotional charge and installing more adaptive beliefs about yourself and the experience that occurred.

Phase 7–8

Closure & Integration

Every session ends with stabilization. We regularly reassess progress and ensure changes are integrating into your daily life. Treatment is complete when the memory no longer causes significant distress.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Multiple peer-reviewed studies confirm telehealth EMDR produces outcomes equivalent to in-person delivery. We follow established telehealth EMDR protocols specifically designed for secure video sessions.
No. EMDR does not require detailed verbal narration of your trauma. The processing happens through bilateral stimulation while holding the memory in mind — often with minimal verbal description required.
EMDR is effective for PTSD, CPTSD, childhood trauma, single-incident trauma, anxiety, phobias, panic disorder, and depression rooted in adverse experiences.
For single-incident trauma, significant improvement often occurs in 6 to 12 sessions. Complex or developmental trauma typically requires longer treatment. Your therapist will give you a realistic timeline after your initial assessment.
