Darin King, LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor · Founder · Pittsburgh, PA

I started Darin King Counseling because I believe therapy should feel personal — not like a number being processed through a system. After years in large corporate settings, I knew there was a better way to deliver care. One where clients genuinely feel like they matter and are getting what they deserve.

Why I Do This Work

Helping Others Find Their Peace

I’ve always believed that helping someone find their version of peace is one of the most meaningful things one person can do for another. That belief is what brought me to this field — and what keeps me here.

I’m passionate about mental health in the most genuine sense. After over a decade working across different settings — outpatient mental health, drug and alcohol treatment, group homes, corrections, and private practice — I’ve seen how many people struggle in silence, often for years, before getting support that truly fits their needs.

I founded Darin King Counseling to build something different. A small Pittsburgh-based practice where the focus stays on the client — where people are known by name, not file number, and where care is shaped around who you are rather than what’s convenient for the system.

“Helping others find ‘their’ peace has always brought me enjoyment — and I look forward to walking with you on your journey.”

Background & Experience

Over a Decade Across Diverse Settings

My path to private practice wasn’t a straight line — and I think that’s made me a better therapist. I’ve worked with children, teens, and adults across a wide range of settings including outpatient mental health, drug and alcohol treatment (including as a supervisor), group homes, and corrections.

I graduated from Seton Hill University with a Bachelor’s in Human Services, then earned my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Waynesburg University — all while working as a supervisor at a drug and alcohol clinic. I completed my LPC hours in a group practice before founding Darin King Counseling.

My clinical focus has increasingly centered on trauma counseling — understanding how adverse experiences shape the nervous system, relationships, and sense of self, and using evidence-based approaches to help people heal at their own pace.

Outside of sessions, I share what I’ve learned in practice with a wider audience. You can browse a collection of my published contributions to mental health, healthcare, and workplace publications.

My Approach to Counseling

Empathy, Respect, and Collaboration — at Your Pace

My approach is rooted in a simple belief: you are the expert on your own life. My job is to walk alongside you — not lead you somewhere I’ve decided you should go.

As a trauma-informed and client-centered therapist, I create a space that is safe, non-judgmental, and paced by you. If trauma work becomes too overwhelming at any point, I’m not afraid to back off and focus on building other areas of healing until you’re ready to approach the difficult material again. Healing doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing for trauma processing — helping the brain reprocess distressing memories without requiring you to relive them in detail.

ACT

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for building psychological flexibility — moving toward what matters in life even in the presence of difficult thoughts and emotions.

DBT

Dialectical Behavior Therapy for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness — practical skills for a more manageable inner life.

What Clients Often Appreciate

You Set the Pace. I Follow Your Lead.

One of the things clients most often say they appreciate is feeling genuinely heard — not just listened to, but understood. And that the pace of our work together is always theirs to set.

I specialize in trauma work but I know that trauma work done wrong causes harm. So we build safety first. We build your coping toolkit. And when you’re ready — truly ready, not when a protocol says you should be — we go deeper. And if it becomes too much, we step back. There’s no rush. Healing isn’t linear and it doesn’t have a deadline.

★★★★★

“Darin is what a therapist should always be. He was very respectful, insightful, and attuned to my needs at every meeting. He had a way of just knowing what was going on inside my head.”

— Robert P., Google Review

★★★★★

“For once I felt like I was actually heard in session and we actually did ‘therapy’ — not the usual talk-and-the-counselor-listens kind I’d been through countless times.”

— Stephanie, Google Review
