Healing From the Inside Out
Internal Family Systems therapy — developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz — is built on a simple but profound idea: we are not one unified self. We are a system of parts, each with its own feelings, beliefs, and ways of protecting us.
IFS helps you get to know these parts — the inner critic, the people-pleaser, the part that shuts down when overwhelmed, the part that carries old pain — not to silence them, but to understand them. Because every part has a positive intention. Even the ones that seem to be working against you.
At Darin King Counseling, we integrate IFS alongside trauma-informed care, EMDR, and other evidence-based approaches — using it where it fits your specific presentation rather than applying it rigidly.

Understanding Your Internal System
IFS identifies three types of parts — and a core Self that is always intact beneath them, no matter how much pain you’ve experienced.
Exiles
The parts that carry pain, shame, fear, or hurt — often from early experiences. They’re pushed out of awareness by other parts trying to protect the system from that pain.
Managers
Proactive protectors — the inner critic, the perfectionist, the people-pleaser, the controller. They work hard to keep the system functioning and prevent exiles from being triggered.
Firefighters
Reactive protectors that kick in when exiles get triggered — dissociation, numbing, substance use, impulsive behavior. They’re trying to put out the fire of overwhelming emotion.
And beneath all of it — Self. IFS holds that every person has a core Self that is compassionate, curious, calm, and capable of leading the system. No matter how much trauma you’ve experienced, Self is never damaged. IFS therapy helps you access it.

When IFS Therapy Is a Good Fit
IFS is particularly powerful when you feel like parts of yourself are in conflict — one part wants to move forward while another holds back, or you notice the same patterns playing out even when you consciously want something different.
- Healing from trauma, PTSD, and adverse childhood experiences
- Reducing anxiety, shame, and self-criticism
- Overcoming perfectionism and people-pleasing patterns
- Religious trauma and faith-related identity struggles
- Depression rooted in self-blame or worthlessness
- Relationship patterns that keep repeating despite wanting change
- Complex PTSD and developmental trauma
How We Use IFS at Darin King Counseling
We integrate IFS into our broader trauma-informed approach — combining it with EMDR, CBT, and somatic work where appropriate.
Parts Mapping & Exploration
We start by helping you identify and get to know your parts — building a relationship of curiosity and compassion with each one rather than trying to eliminate or override them.
Unburdening Exiles
The heart of IFS — helping the exiled parts that carry old pain to release what they’ve been holding. This is where deep healing happens and where lasting change begins.
IFS + EMDR
For trauma specifically, we often combine IFS with EMDR — using IFS to prepare and resource parts before processing, then EMDR to reprocess the traumatic memories themselves.
Accessing Self
Throughout the work, we’re building your capacity to lead your internal system from Self — the calm, compassionate core that was never damaged by what you experienced.
